In 2010 I was in New York visiting family, and I had gone to Best Buy on Fifth Ave to see about getting Christmas gifts for some people on my list. I was wearing my pork pie hat and was walking toward the music section when a man came up to me and complimented me on my hat, I said thanks, and then he started talking about a song called Goodbye Pork Pie Hat by Charles Mingus. I told him I knew of him, but only heard a few songs. We started talking about all things jazz and after that, he told me to look up a live version of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat that was his favorite. I wound up finding the actual album by Mingus that day (last copy!) but not the one he mentioned to me. So fast forward some eight years later, and I’d like to thank this man who got me to dig deep into Charles Mingus music, and for his recommendation and just for talking about music. I did find the live version he talked about later on, and it was every bit amazing as he had described it. So thanks for that. Badass Picture!
Thanks! Oh man, better late than never. How’d I miss this?
